‘We’ll see the Yaya from two seasons ago’ – Pellegrini tips Toure to return to top form

first_imgManchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has tipped star midfielder Yaya Toure to return to his best form this season after opening the new Premier League campaign with a brace against West Brom. The Blues eased to a 3-0 win at the Hawthorns, with the Ivorian opening the scoring with a deflected shot off team-mate David Silva, before doubling their lead with wonderful curling effort inside the half-hour mark.Captain Vincent Kompany’s late header capped off a strong performance from the two-time champions and Pellegrini reckons, after a stuttering season last year, Toure will shine again following a dominant display.I always said last season it was a strange season for Yaya, he started with a lot of problems, the death of his brother, his agents”, said the Chilean.“I think he was not focused on what he had to do last year.“We spoke before the start of the season and I am very sure we will see the Yaya from two years ago. He is a very important player for us.“I don’t think Yaya deserved the amount of criticism he received last season.“He is an important player for us. It is very difficult for a player when you have so many problems.”Pellegrini also praised the efforts of £49million summer signing Raheem Sterling on his club debut. The former Liverpool man played 74 minutes but largely played second fiddle to City’s old guard before being replaced by Samir Nasri.Sterling had a few chances and was denied a debut goal by Baggies keeper Boaz Myhill when clean through, but but Pelegrini insisted he was happy with the 20-year-old’s contribution. The Blues boss added: “I’m not disappointed because Raheem played 70 minutes very well. It is not easy for him to play a new style with new teammates, he worked a lot and he had two clear chances.“If he continues to play like this I am sure he will be the player we bought.” Manchester City and Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure 1last_img read more
