Photo: Prothom aloA Saudi businessman is taking part in election campaign in favour of the ruling Awami League’s mayoral candidate in Sylhet City Corporation election, Badruddin Ahmed Kamran.This is a new dimension in the polls campaign. The people of the diaspora community in London take part in the election campaign in Sylhet as many people from Sylhet live in the United Kingdom.The Saudi businessman named Faisal Girgiri was seen taking part in street rallies supporting Kamran. He has also been seeking votes for the AL mayoral candidate.When contacted, Kamran told Prothom Alo that he came to know Faisal Girgiri when he went to Makkah to perform Hajj (pilgrimage). He said the businessman gave him words that he would take part in Kamran’s election campaign.According to Kamran, Faisal came to Sylhet on 24 July (Tuesday). On that night, he joined a street rally supporting Kamran and made speech in Arabic.Jasim Uddin Bhuiayan, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Saudi Arabia who has been in business there for the past 10 years, told Prothom Alo that Girgiri came with him.In the street rally, Girgiri said he is overwhelmed by the love of the people of Sylhet.According to Jasim Uddin, Girgiri is “very sympathetic towards Bangladeshis”.
