Buffalo to launch worlds thinnest portable hard drive

first_imgIf you need storage in a portable form, but want to keep the size and weight to a minimum, your best choice is a USB stick drive. But their storage is limited, meaning a portable hard drive may be a better solution.Buffalo has announced it is set to launch the world’s thinnest portable hard drive next month. The drive is called the Buffalo MiniStation HD-PUSU3 and offers 500GB of storage space using a 2.5-inch HDD. It measures 115 x 79mm, but is only 8.8mm thick and weighs a mere 140 grams. You’ll be glad to hear this is a USB 3.0 drive and it only requires a single USB cable for both data transfers and power. Buffalo is going to offer the MiniStation in red, black, and silver color variants. They’ve also kept the weight down by using an aluminum case, which has been anodized to make it scratch resistant and generally more hard wearing.Buffalo cater to the Japanese market, but I’d be surprised if this drive didn’t make it to other markets after it launches next month. At $130 it is by no means cheap, but Buffalo is clearly aiming this at the Apple crowd and mentions MacBook Air Best Price at Amazon owners in particular. You’re also getting the world’s thinnest portable hard drive, so the premium price isn’t a surprise. It may be true that this is the world’s thinnest portable hard drive so far, but Buffalo fail to mention it actually ties for world’s thinnest. ADATA announced a portable drive of exactly the same thickness and storage size back in September last year. The MiniStation definitely wins in the looks department, though.More at Buffalo (translated)last_img
