World Championships 2019: Gold in sight for Deepak Punia after reaching 86kg final

first_imgDeepak Punia will wrestle for a gold medal after winning his semi-final match 8-2 vs Switzerland’s Stefan Reichmuth and will now clash against legendary Hassan Yazdani of Iran in the 86Kg Category final on Sunday.Deepak Punia is a cadet world champ, a junior world champ and now he will travel to Tokyo for Olympics after qualifying from the World Championships.Earlier, Deepak defeated Carlos Arturo Izquierdo Mendez of Colombia in the quarter-finals to become the fourth Indian wrestler to secure a berth for the Tokyo Olympics next year. Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar have already made the cut for the 2020 Games and bagged bronze medals in their respective weight categories.Junior World Champion Deepak Punia, who is seeded fourth, had earlier defeated Turkmenistan’s Kodirov 6-0 to reach the last-8 on Saturday. Earlier, in his first-round contest, he had staged a remarkable comeback to recover from a 0-5 deficit to win 8-6 against Kazhakstan’s Adilet Davlumbayev.The only Indian to win a gold medal in the World Championships is Sushil Kumar in the 66 kg category.
