Association better equipped to assist village councils

first_imgDALA’s chairman Yoland Jno Jules told members of the media on Tuesday, May 14th that the organization is now better equipped to conduct its affairs, having obtained two members of staff.The Dominica Association of Local Authorities (DALA) whose aim is to strengthen village councils is now better equipped to do so.The Association received a donation of $28,855.55 Euros from VNG International based in The Hague through the aerial project through the Caribbean Association of Local Authorities (CALA) for capacity building and to strengthen the local government body in Dominica. From that donation, $10, 000 Euros was used to purchase 1 desktop computer, 2 new laptops, 1 Toshiba printer, 1 camera, 1 copying machine and a set of stationeries. DALA’s chairman Yoland Jno Jules told members of the media on Tuesday, May 14th that the organization is now better equipped to conduct its affairs, having obtained two members of staff.“Today we are happy that the VNG has given to us two staff members; our administrative officer Junella Magloire-Trotman and our field officer Vicienne George”. Mrs Trotman and Ms George will be based in the office, located in the Local Government’s Department upstairs the Traffic Department in Roseau. Field officer Vicienne George (left) and administrative officer Junella Magloire-TrotmanPrior to their appointment, the office would remain closed except when the association would host its monthly meetings. “But now the office will be opened at least for the next three months every day with the exception of weekends,” Mr Jno Jules noted. This he said will help the association with its plans to strengthen the village councils, the district associations and to get DALA on a sound footing where it supposed to be. “We heard the talk before where people have said they are not interested in DALA because there is nothing they are doing for village councils but I want to tell them today that that is a changed thing that is a thing of the past,” Mr Jno Jules emphasized. Ms George will be responsible visit the village councils, attend their meetings and present DALA’s plan of action to them among other things.DALA will also assist the village councils to prepare a plan of action, budget, and write projects.“We also want to let the nation know that the DALA business is a voluntary organization, there’s no financial gain in it for any of the executive members other than our service that we give to the country,” Mr Jno Jules said.
